Alexander Technique
Included within courses and retreats.
The Alexander Technique is an important addition to human resources of self awareness and personal education. This technique is widely recognised in medical, educational, theatrical and musical circles as a reliable and effective method of self-help and self-mastery. The Alexander Technique helps to change the habits of bad posture, achieve freedom of movement, gain confidence and increase a sense of general wellbeing in everyday activities.
Frederick Mathias Alexander (1869-1955), an Australian therapist, demonstrated that the difficulties many people experience in learning, in control of performance, and in physical functioning are caused by unconscious habits. These habits interfere with your natural poise and your capacity to learn. When you stop interfering with innate coordination of the body, you can take on more complex activities with greater self-confidence and presence of mind. There has been some scientific research carried out concurs with the beliefs that Alexander formed, such as the relationship between mind and body (the thought of doing an action triggering a physical reaction or tension). Today doctors recommend this technique to eliminate harmful habits that cause physical and emotional stress. This technique is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. It is particularly beneficial for anyone suffering problems related to headaches, neck and back pain, disc, shoulder and hip trouble, whiplash, sciatica, tension and stress.
Together we will monitor your muscular tension and you will be reminded to implement tiny changes in movement.During each physical session with my gentle hands-on guidance and verbal instruction the underlying principles will be revealed. Gentle manipulation will be used to ease the body into a more relaxed and natural position. You will experience and observe your own habitual movement patterns which provide the means for release and change.
